What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and correction of dental and facial irregularities. A malocclusion commonly referred to as a “bad bite” may be related to improper size or positioning of the teeth, jaws or a combination of both.
How is an Orthodontist different from a Dentist?
An Orthodontist is a dental specialist that is trained to correct irregularities of the teeth and jaws and guide facial development to improve the patient’s overall appearance. An Orthodontist is a certified dentist that has chosen to complete an additional three years of specialized university training to obtain a Master of Science degree in Clinical Orthodontics.
Your family dentist will often be the first to diagnose an orthodontic problem and then will refer you to an Orthodontist. Some dentists may elect to treat certain basic orthodontic problems; however, more complex orthodontic situations require the guidance and expertise of an Orthodontist.
